Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park, Coal mining historic site in Regional District of Nanaimo, Canada.
Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park is a nature reserve with mining heritage in British Columbia's Regional District of Nanaimo. The site features a preserved concrete structure and a walking path that extends toward the Nanaimo River.
The mine opened in 1912 and produced substantial amounts of coal in its first year of operation. The mine closed in 1931 due to economic challenges that made continued extraction unfeasible.
The site reflects the importance of coal mining to Vancouver Island, where thousands worked in this industry during a long period. The remaining structures show how central this work was to the region's development.
The park is open year-round and accessible from the Trans-Canada Highway 1 via Morden Road for easy access. Interpretive signs throughout the site explain the former mining operations and help visitors understand what they are seeing.
The concrete structure built in 1913 at this location is one of only a handful of its kind remaining in North America. Few similar industrial buildings from that era have survived to the present day.
