Brock's Monument, Military memorial in Queenston Heights, Canada
Brock's Monument is a limestone column at Queenston Heights and one of Canada's oldest war memorials. The structure rises about 56 meters and commands views across the landscape above Niagara Falls.
The first monument was erected in 1824 but was damaged by explosives in 1840. The present structure was rebuilt on the same site between 1853 and 1856.
Plaques at the base honor British, Canadian, and First Nations soldiers who died during the 1812 battle at this site. The inscriptions reflect the different groups who fought together in this conflict.
A spiral staircase with 235 steps leads to an observation platform overlooking Lake Ontario and the Niagara region. The stairs can become slippery in wet conditions, so visitors should wear suitable footwear.
The base of the monument serves as the burial site for Major General Sir Isaac Brock and Lieutenant Colonel John Macdonell. These two military leaders were central figures in the battle, and their entombment at this location makes it a place of honor.
