Oil Springs

Oil Springs is a village in Lambton County, Ontario, centered on oil production with drilling facilities mixed among residential areas. The area contains numerous wells of different sizes, museum buildings, and historical infrastructure that has been used over the decades.

The first commercial oil well in North America was discovered here in 1858, which triggered rapid expansion and settlement. This find made the region an early center of the oil industry.

The village is walkable, but the Oil Museum is the best place to start understanding what you are seeing. Many wells are visible from the road, but not all are accessible, so visiting the museum first helps orient you.

A local oil company still uses a rope-and-pulley system from the 1800s to pump oil, a method developed in this region. This old technique operates alongside modern equipment today.
