Ladies of the Maccabees Building
Ladies of the Maccabees Building, Neoclassical fraternal organization building in Port Huron, United States.
The Ladies of the Maccabees Building is a Neoclassical structure with limestone walls and a shallow dome, located at 901 Huron Avenue in Port Huron. Four Corinthian columns frame the main entrance, creating a formal and dignified appearance.
Designed by architect George Harvey in 1906, the building served as headquarters for the first fraternal benefit society operated solely by women until 1928. Following its original purpose, it housed various institutions including a junior college and government offices.
The building stands as a testament to women's independence in fraternal organizations, as the Ladies of the Maccabees ran their operations from here without male oversight. The interior spaces still reflect the values of self-determination that shaped this organization.
The building stands prominently on Huron Avenue and is easy to identify by its columned facade and dome. Visitors should note that it now contains private office spaces, so accessing the interior typically requires advance arrangement.
A grand staircase extends through three stories to the dome at the heart of the building. Original oak trim and decorative tile flooring remain intact, showing the craftsmanship invested in the original interior finishes.
