Eaton's Annex, Department store building in Downtown Toronto, Canada
Eaton's Annex was a ten-story building at the corner of Albert Street and James Street in downtown Toronto, containing retail spaces and offices. An underground passage connected the Annex to the main store, creating Toronto's first public underground shopping corridor.
The building opened in January 1913 as the House Furnishing Building and served as a retail establishment for many decades. A fire in 1977 damaged parts of the structure and led to major changes in its future use.
The building housed Canada's first department store outlet, which catered to Toronto's working people starting in 1930. It represented a shift in making shopping more accessible to ordinary residents.
The location is today easily accessible through the PATH network, the underground walkway system that simplifies navigation in the area. It is helpful to explore the immediate surroundings to understand how the site connects to Toronto's modern downtown.
The location was later redeveloped into Trinity Square and the Bell Trinity Square office complex, with the underground passages preserved and still in use. This transformation shows how historic infrastructure was adapted into the modern downtown landscape.
