Sterling Tower, Art Deco skyscraper on Bay Street, Toronto, Canada.
Sterling Tower is a 21-story Art Deco skyscraper on Bay Street in Toronto. Its facade of limestone and granite features geometric patterns and vertical lines typical of 1920s architecture.
Architects Chapman and Oxley completed the building in 1928, creating one of the city's tallest structures at the time. Shortly after, in 1929, it was surpassed in height by the Royal York Hotel.
The tower shows how Toronto grew and transformed into a modern business hub during the 1920s. It still shapes the look of Bay Street today and reminds visitors of when the city built its first major financial district.
The tower is easily visible from the street and located in a busy commercial district with good pedestrian access. Visitors can study the facade and design from Bay Street and appreciate the Art Deco details from multiple viewpoints.
The building received Heritage Property status in 1976, recognizing its importance to the city's history. This designation ensures its protection and survival as a key witness to Toronto's early growth.
