Cloud Gardens, Urban conservatory park in Financial District, Toronto, Canada
Cloud Gardens is an urban conservatory park in Toronto's Financial District situated between Yonge Street and Bay Street. The grounds feature a greenhouse with tropical plants and public green space that provides breathing room among tall buildings.
The site was established in the 1980s when developers of Bay Adelaide Centre provided financial compensation for exceeding building regulations. This payment enabled the creation of the green space as a trade-off for added building height.
The grounds include a monument honoring construction workers, with detailed plaques representing different trades like steelwork and electrical installation. When visitors walk through, they can recognize the contribution these workers made to the city's development.
The grounds are currently closed for major renovation work, including waterproofing upgrades to the structures. Reopening is expected in the latter part of 2026.
The greenhouse employs specialized watering systems including misting equipment and a rail transport system to maintain climate conditions for numerous tree ferns, palms, and wall gardens. These technical solutions sustain a tropical environment in the heart of a Canadian city.
