TORONTO sign, 3D illuminated sign at Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto, Canada
The Toronto sign is a large three-dimensional installation with illuminated letters on Nathan Phillips Square. The structure features a steel frame with aluminum cladding and translucent polycarbonate panels that are lit by programmable LED lights.
The installation was built in 2015 for the Pan American Games as a temporary structure. Due to its strong appeal, Toronto City Council decided to keep it permanently.
The vinyl wrap design titled Rekindle by artist Joseph Sagaj celebrates Indigenous languages and cultures of North America. The artwork was created specifically to highlight the importance of these languages within the city.
The sign is located on Nathan Phillips Square, a central and easily accessible location downtown. The square is usually busy and offers plenty of space for photos and exploring the surrounding area.
In 2018, a Medicine Wheel design was added to the sign representing completeness and connection. This symbol comes from North American Indigenous iconography and adds a deeper cultural layer to the installation.
