Kingston Centre, Outdoor shopping centre in Kingston, Canada
Kingston Centre is an outdoor shopping complex on Princess Street in Kingston, Ontario. It consists of a row of retail stores, restaurants, and service businesses arranged along open walkways with no roof overhead.
The complex opened in 1955 as one of the first enclosed shopping malls in the region. It was fully rebuilt in the early 2000s and converted into its current open-air format.
Kingston Centre sits at one of the busiest Kingston Transit transfer points, which means the area sees a steady flow of commuters and shoppers throughout the day. This mix of transit users and retail visitors gives the place the feel of a neighborhood hub rather than a destination.
Shopping here means walking outside between stores, so dressing for the weather is a good idea regardless of the season. The transit stop on site makes it easy to reach by bus from other parts of Kingston.
A section of the property was never rebuilt after the original mall was torn down and remains empty to this day, surrounded by residential buildings from the 1960s and 1970s. This gap in the otherwise developed block gives the site an unexpectedly open look when viewed from the street.
