Peel County Courthouse

Peel County Courthouse, Victorian courthouse in Brampton, Canada

The Peel County Courthouse is a three-story courthouse with Venetian Gothic architecture, featuring a central tower and classical stone details. The building displays symmetrical proportions and retains original courtrooms and council chambers from its earliest years.

The courthouse opened in 1867 during Canadian Confederation and served as the legal center for Peel County until 1973. Its construction reflects the period when Canada was establishing itself as an independent nation with new institutions.

The building now houses the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives within the Heritage Complex, where it serves as a venue for exhibitions and community programs. Local residents visit to learn about the region's past and take part in cultural events throughout the year.

The building is open during regular business hours Monday through Friday, and guided tours are available for visitors. The restored rooms and galleries make it easy to navigate and explore at your own pace throughout the day.

The original Victorian council chambers and courtrooms remain intact and are now used for public events and gatherings. These authentic spaces offer visitors a genuine sense of how legal proceedings took place during Canada's early years.
