South Indian Lake

South Indian Lake is a body of water in Manitoba covering roughly 2000 square kilometers with numerous small islands scattered throughout. It connects to the Churchill River system, which flows northward toward Hudson Bay.

The Hudson's Bay Company established a fur trading post here in 1803 as a key commerce hub. A major transformation occurred in 1975 with the construction of a dam that altered the region.

The O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation shapes daily life through fishing and hunting traditions that remain central to the community. These practices connect people to the land and define much of what happens here throughout the year.

Access is via Provincial Road 493, a gravel highway from Leaf Rapids, or by local airport. Travel conditions can be challenging in winter months, so planning ahead is important for a smooth visit.

The area experienced major upheaval in the 1970s when a dam project forced hundreds of residents to relocate. This pivotal moment continues to shape local history and identity.
