UBC War Memorial Gymnasium, Sports gymnasium at University of British Columbia, Canada
UBC War Memorial Gymnasium is a sports facility at University of British Columbia with a main court measuring approximately 160 feet (49 meters) long, offering fixed seating for over 2,000 spectators plus retractable bleachers for additional capacity. The building contains multiple volleyball courts, full dressing rooms with showers, and a spacious lobby area designed for refreshments and exhibitions.
The building opened in 1951 as a memorial honoring University of British Columbia members who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. This dual purpose of athletic venue and war memorial has defined the site since its founding.
It serves as home court for the UBC Thunderbirds basketball and volleyball teams while also hosting remembrance ceremonies for university members lost in both World Wars. The space blends athletic competition with memorial practices, creating a place of both celebration and reflection for the campus community.
The venue is easy to navigate with facilities designed for both spectators and athletes, including ample restroom access throughout the building. Plan to arrive early during major basketball games or volleyball tournaments, as crowds can fill the available seating quickly.
The wooden floor was originally constructed with horsehair padding underneath, a building technique from an earlier era. The Toronto Raptors also used the facility in 2010 for their initial training session in British Columbia.
