Dartmouth Marine Slips, Maritime repair facility in Dartmouth, Canada
Dartmouth Marine Slips was a shipyard facility along the eastern shore of Halifax Harbour equipped with docks and railways for hauling vessels. The installation could handle ships up to 3,000 tons and provided repairs and maintenance for commercial fleets.
Founded in 1859 as Chebucto Marine Railway, the facility serviced blockade runners during the American Civil War and naval vessels during World War II. The operation shaped maritime commerce in the harbor for more than a century before closing in 2003.
Hundreds of maritime workers once gathered here, including skilled craftspeople who maintained vessels from across the region. The site held deep roots in local identity, representing generations of families whose livelihoods depended on harbor-based trades.
The original site is no longer accessible as it has been converted into residential and commercial buildings. Visitors interested in its history can find exhibits and monuments throughout Dartmouth that document the harbor's maritime heritage.
The slips served both commercial and military vessels, making it a strategically important facility that shaped the region's wartime economy. Today, the site's industrial past remains embedded in remaining structures and local memory.
