Balfour Building

Balfour Building, Art Deco office building at Spadina Avenue and Adelaide Street, Toronto, Canada.

The Balfour Building is an office structure at the corner of Spadina Avenue and Adelaide Street that rises across 12 floors. The facade displays geometric patterns from the 1930s using brick and concrete construction, with generous windows that bring natural light into the interior spaces.

Benjamin Brown designed the building in 1930 as a commercial structure for the Schiffer-Hillman Clothing Company. The construction coincided with the expansion of Toronto's textile trade, as this area became the heart of the clothing industry.

The building sits at a busy intersection where shops and offices work together, reflecting how this neighborhood functions as a commercial and craft hub. People in the area use the location as part of their daily routine, with shoppers and workers moving through the streets.

The building is easily visible from the street and sits at a major intersection with good pedestrian access. The original elevator system is preserved within the structure, and the windows provide good views of the surroundings from various floors.

The upper structure of the building ends in a two-story tower, creating an unexpected architectural detail. From this tower, visitors can gain a rare view down Spadina Avenue that is rarely noticed by passersby.
