Secret Swing, Art installation in Graffiti Alley, Toronto, Canada
The Secret Swing was a standard playground swing suspended between two buildings in an urban alley. It created an unexpected recreational space in the heart of the city's dense street environment.
Artist Corwyn Lund installed the swing in September 2003 as part of the Psychotopes exhibition at YYZ Artists Outlet. Following its removal in 2005, two individuals named Vince and Kai created a replacement dedicated to the city's residents.
The swing became a gathering spot where photographers, street artists, and Toronto residents met to share their experiences and stories. This informal meeting place showed how a simple installation could bring people together across the city.
The original swing was located in Rush Lane between Spadina and Portland, just south of Queen Street West in the Graffiti Alley area. Visitors should know the installation is no longer standing, but the site remains a point of interest for art enthusiasts exploring this neighborhood.
The swing underwent multiple resurrections as community members repeatedly restored it whenever authorities removed it. This cycle of rebuilding by unknown hands turned it into a symbol of artistic resilience and shared commitment among residents.
