Eglinton Theatre, Art Deco movie theater in Toronto, Canada.

Description

The Eglinton Theatre is an Art Deco movie house in Toronto featuring a striking neon sign tower arranged in a three-stage pylon, with its front facade decorated with multiple lighting fixtures throughout. The structure combines classic theater architecture with decorative elements that typify the design language of that era.

History

The theater was built between 1935 and 1936 and won the Bronze Medal from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 1937 for its architectural merit. After approximately seven decades operating as a cinema, the building later transformed into a multipurpose event venue.

Culture

Inside you can see an etched glass mural created by artist John Clymer that shows three muses, alongside Art Deco female statues placed in the auditorium. These artworks shape the character of the space and reflect the artistic vision that guided the design.

Practical

The building is located at 400 Eglinton Avenue West and now accommodates about 300 seats for various types of events. When visiting, keep in mind that this is a heritage-protected location open to visitors during scheduled events and performances.

Did you know?

The building incorporated cutting-edge materials of its era such as Catalin, Vitrolite, stainless steel, and Flexwood throughout its structure and decorative elements. These materials were advanced for the time and continue to define the theater's appearance today.
