Stephen Leacock Building, University building in Downtown Montreal, Canada.
The Stephen Leacock Building is a ten-story university structure with precast concrete panels located on McGill's downtown campus in Montreal. The lower three floors contain twenty-four lecture rooms, including the largest auditorium on campus that seats around 650 students.
The structure was completed in 1965, replacing the McGill Observatory and part of the Presbyterian College on the downtown campus. This construction marked a shift in how the campus was organized and used.
The building houses departments of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Islamic Studies, bringing together students and faculty from different academic fields. These departments shape the daily rhythm inside, making the space a meeting point for people studying history, philosophy, sociology, and religion.
The building sits on Sherbrooke Street West and is easily accessible on foot from downtown Montreal. Multiple staircases and elevators connect the various floors, though finding your way through the building may take some time if you are unfamiliar with its layout.
The circulation areas feature glass walls that let in plenty of natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting in hallways. This design choice makes the interior passages feel more open and connected to the outdoors.
