Hausstock, Mountain summit in Glarus Alps, Switzerland

Hausstock is a mountain summit in the Glarus Alps reaching 3,158 meters (10,361 feet) and marking the boundary between Graubünden and Glarus cantons. The peak features steep slopes, rock faces, and extensive snow fields that divide the ascent into distinct climbing sections.

The region gained historical importance when Russian forces under General Alexander Suworov retreated across the Panix Pass below the peak in 1799 to escape French Revolutionary troops. This event marked a crucial moment in the Napoleonic Wars and demonstrated the strategic value of Alpine passes.

The mountain has drawn experienced climbers from around the world since the 1800s and remains a popular destination for ambitious alpinists. The routes here are known among mountaineers for their technical difficulty and for allowing climbers to reach multiple nearby summits in a single expedition.

Climbing the peak requires proper equipment such as ice axes and crampons, especially when crossing snow fields during warmer months. It is wise to check weather and snow conditions before starting your climb, as these significantly affect difficulty and required gear.

The area around the peak forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tektonic Arena Sardona, which displays globally significant rock displacement layers and tectonic structures. These geological features allow visitors to observe rock formations that are millions of years old and normally hidden deep underground.
