Kriens, municipality in the canton of Lucerne, Switzerland
Kriens is a municipality in Luzern-Land located at the foot of Mount Pilatus near Lucerne. The town has a mix of older and newer buildings, with local shops and cafes lining the streets.
Kriens appears in documents from around 840 AD as a possession of a Benedictine monastery in Lucerne. The town later became part of Habsburg lands until Lucerne took control in 1392, after which it gradually transformed from a rural settlement into a modern suburb.
Kriens speaks a High Alemannic dialect, and the community is diverse with Swiss residents and newcomers from different countries. Catholicism shapes community life, though Protestants, Muslims, and other faiths are also present and contribute to the local culture.
Kriens has good rail connections with a train station linking the town to Lucerne and other places. Regular bus lines run through the town, making it easy for visitors and residents to reach different parts of the city and surrounding villages.
The area of Obernau within Kriens retains a village-like feel with small shops and traditional houses. Hergiswald, a small hamlet west of town, is known for its quiet farms and rural countryside.
