Interlaken, Resort town in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland
Interlaken is a town in the Bernese Oberland that sits on a flat valley floor between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The settlement lies at 571 meters elevation and is surrounded by peaks of the Bernese Alps.
The settlement was known as Aarmühle until 1891 and grew around a monastery founded in 1133. The town later developed into a resort destination that attracted international travelers during the 19th century.
The Unspunnenfest celebration brings together Swiss citizens for traditional sports competitions, alpine horn performances, and folk music presentations.
The railway station links the center to larger Swiss cities and to mountain regions, including Jungfraujoch at 3,454 meters (11,332 feet). The town provides a convenient starting point for day trips to surrounding valleys and alpine lakes.
A 14-hectare meadow in the center serves as a landing zone for paragliders descending from surrounding peaks. The meadow remains open and offers unobstructed views toward Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
