Grand Mountet Hut, Mountain hut in Valais, Switzerland
The Grand Mountet Hut is a mountain refuge in the Valais Alps offering overnight accommodation and meals at high elevation. It sits on a high plateau with direct views of the Zinal Glacier and several four-thousand-meter peaks that dominate the landscape.
The refuge was founded in 1887 to serve climbers in the region at that time. Major renovations in later decades expanded the building and improved conditions for longer stays.
The hut serves as a meeting point for climbers from around the world who gather here to rest before difficult mountain routes and share their experiences. The daily rhythm follows nature: early breakfast before dawn, daytime excursions, and shared evening meals with views of the surrounding peaks.
Access is via a marked trail starting from Zinal and passing through varied terrain along the way. Visitors should start early and bring sturdy gear and plenty of water, as the route is demanding.
From the hut, visitors can gaze at a rare collection of four-thousand-meter peaks, including well-known summits like the Zinalrothorn and Dent Blanche. This proximity to several major mountain peaks makes the location a viewing point of special quality.
