Fuorn Pass, Mountain pass at 2149 meters in Grisons, Switzerland
Fuorn Pass is a mountain pass at 2149 meters (7051 feet) in Graubünden that connects the Engadine Valley with Val Müstair through the Swiss National Park. The road crosses through alpine meadows and passes snow-capped peaks along the way.
The road through the pass opened in 1871, creating an important connection for people and goods between communities on either side of the mountains. This route made travel between the two valleys much more direct than before.
The name comes from ancient iron foundries that once operated in the area, and you can still find traces of these structures along nearby trails.
The road stays open during summer months and has gentle grades, making it accessible for both cars and cyclists crossing the mountains. The area around the pass is easy to navigate and explore at a comfortable pace.
The pass forms part of the watershed dividing waters heading to the Adriatic Sea from those going to the Black Sea, marking a fundamental continental boundary. Crossing this point means passing one of Europe's most important geographical divides.
