St. Beatus Caves

The limestone cave network contains numerous chambers, halls, and underground streams extending over 14 kilometers beneath the Alps near Lake Thun.

The caves gained recognition in the sixth century when Saint Beatus established a hermitage there, leading to its designation as a Swiss cultural property.

Twenty-five information panels in German and English throughout the cave system explain geological formations and regional mythology to visitors.

The cave maintains constant temperatures of 8-10 degrees Celsius year-round, making appropriate clothing necessary for the kilometer-long guided tour section.

Natural waterfalls cascade down the mountainside at the cave entrance, creating multiple bridge crossings for visitors approaching the cavern.
