Gotthard Road Tunnel, Road tunnel in Uri and Ticino cantons, Switzerland
The Gotthard Road Tunnel runs as a two-lane bore through Alpine rock, linking Uri in the north with Ticino in the south. The roadway passes through lit sections with ventilation shafts, emergency exits and regular breakdown bays along the entire route.
The tunnel was completed in the late 1970s and opened to traffic in 1980. It replaced earlier routes over mountain passes that were often closed during winter months.
This passage allows travelers from the German-speaking north to reach Italian-speaking southern Switzerland without crossing high mountain passes. Many visitors use it during winter when the passes become impassable.
The tunnel remains open year-round and offers a weather-proof alternative to higher mountain roads. During holidays and summer weekends, long queues often form at the portals, so early morning or late evening hours bring shorter delays.
Before entering, signs warn drivers to remove sunglasses to adjust to the dim light inside. The tunnel walls show natural color shifts in the rock along the route, from gray granite to reddish layers in the southern section.
