Giétro Glacier, Valley glacier in Valais, Switzerland
The Giétro Glacier extends over 4.5 kilometers in width and covers 5.3 square kilometers between Mont Blanc de Cheilon and La Ruinette mountains.
In 1818, the glacier formed a natural dam that collapsed, releasing 18 million cubic meters of water into the valley, causing 44 casualties.
The name Giétro derives from Wallis dialect meaning chalet or shelter, originating from the Latin word jacitum, which influenced regional architecture terminology.
The glacier feeds into Lake Mauvoisin and contributes to the Dranse de Bagnes river system, supplying water resources to the surrounding region.
The glacier features a 40 percent slope in its lower section, creating numerous crevasses that shape its distinctive surface formation.
