Oberaletsch Glacier, Alpine glacier in Valais, Switzerland
Oberaletsch Glacier is an Alpine ice field in the Bernese Alps that splits into two separate branches high on the mountain. These arms flow downward in a dramatic fork pattern before tapering to their lowest point.
This glacier once formed part of the larger Aletsch system during the 19th century but gradually separated over time. The disconnection occurred as regional ice masses responded to shifting climate conditions.
The Swiss Alpine Club operates the Oberaletschhütte at 2,640 meters, providing mountaineers with shelter and support since its establishment.
Marked hiking trails from Belalp provide access to the ice field at varying difficulty levels suited to different abilities. A staffed mountain hut at 2,640 meters (8,660 feet) offers shelter and supplies for visitors exploring the area.
The glacier flows southeast toward the Aletsch Glacier without connecting, terminating at an elevation of 2,150 meters above sea level.
