Breithorn, Mountain peak in Valais, Switzerland.
The Breithorn is a mountain peak standing at 3,785 meters (12,418 feet), rising above steep rocky slopes with views over the Lötschental valley and neighboring Alpine ranges. The summit is connected to several hiking routes and mountain lodges that link the high mountains to the valley floor.
The first ascent occurred in 1865, marking the start of regular mountaineering activity on this peak. Since then, it has become an important location in the history of Alpine climbing in the Valais region.
The mountain is deeply tied to the traditions of those living in the Lötschental, who have shaped their way of life around the Alpine landscape for generations. Local communities continue to use the meadows and forests following long-established patterns.
The main access starts in Gampel/Steg, where buses travel to the village of Wiler, followed by a cable car to Lauchernalp at 1,965 meters (6,447 feet). From there, marked hiking trails lead to the summit and several mountain huts with varying difficulty levels.
A popular activity is mountain biking on a roughly 10-kilometer descent from Lauchernalp down to Ried, passing through traditional Alpine villages and mountain meadows. The route offers riders an adventure between rugged slopes and gently managed countryside.
