Tschingelhorn, Alpine summit in Bernese Alps, Switzerland.
Tschingelhorn is an Alpine summit in the Bernese Alps situated between the Lauterbrunnen and Lötschental valleys. The mountain features two distinct peaks separated by a deep notch, creating a recognizable landmark when viewed from neighboring regions.
The mountain was first summited in 1865 by a group of mountaineers and guides who established a route that would be followed by future climbers. Its name later became famously associated with a climbing dog who completed numerous first ascents throughout the Alps.
The Tschingelhorn stands within the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of the Bernese Alps, marking the border between the Swiss cantons of Bern and Valais.
Climbers depart from a mountain hut and must navigate across glaciers with an early start to find safer snow. Weather conditions change quickly at this elevation, so timing and preparation are critical for a successful ascent.
A climbing dog named Tschingel took her name from this mountain and participated in more than ten first ascents across the Alps. She became an honorary member of a prestigious Alpine Club, making her an unusual figure in mountaineering history.
