Gspaltenhorn, Mountain summit in Bernese Alps, Switzerland
Gspaltenhorn is a summit in the Bernese Alps that rises to 3,436 meters (11,273 feet) and is marked by steep rock walls and prominent towers. Its distinctive western side displays these formations clearly.
Local mountaineers established the first recorded routes to the summit during the early phase of Alpine tourism in Switzerland. These early explorations laid the groundwork for the climbing activity that continues today.
The name comes from German, referring to the split form of the rocky peaks. Visitors notice this distinctive structure immediately when viewing the mountain from different angles.
Access comes through Kiental, with the Gamchibach trail leading to the Gspaltenhorn Hut at 2,458 meters (8,065 feet), where overnight stays are available. Visitors should expect demanding terrain and bring appropriate gear.
The northwest ridge contains fixed ropes along the Leiterngrat section, helping climbers navigate through exposed rock formations toward the summit. These installations make an otherwise technically challenging route more accessible.
