Schilthorn, Mountain summit in Bernese Alps, Switzerland

Schilthorn is a mountain peak in the Bernese Alps rising to 2,970 meters, from which you can see the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and Mont Blanc peaks. The terrain drops steeply away and offers a wide panorama across the mountain landscape.

The Schilthorn cable car system was built in stages to bring people up to the summit and make the place accessible. Piz Gloria, the restaurant at the top, was completed in 1969 through a partnership with film producers for a James Bond movie.

The summit is closely tied to the annual Inferno ski race that has started here since 1928 and descends steep slopes below. This event shapes local identity and attracts skiers from around the world.

You reach the top via a series of cable cars that climb from Stechelberg through Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Birg. Good footwear is important, and you should expect cold wind at the summit even if it is warm below.

The Piz Gloria restaurant at the top rotates completely, with each rotation taking about 45 minutes. This allows diners to see all the surrounding mountain peaks without leaving their table.
