Axen, Mountain pass between Schwyz and Uri, Switzerland
Axen is a mountain pass between Schwyz and Uri featuring sheer rock cliffs rising above Lake Urner. The road passes through multiple tunnels and galleries that open onto views of the lake below.
The Axenstrasse was completed in 1865 to create the first overland route connecting Schwyz and Uri. Before this, the region depended on boats crossing the lake for transportation.
The pass connects two cantons and creates a meeting point between locals and travelers moving through the region. The mountain meadows around it remain important to the farming way of life here.
The Ober Axen station can be reached by cable car from Flüelen and sits at about 981 meters elevation. Parking is available at the valley station for visitors who want to explore the area.
Walking paths run separately from vehicle traffic here, offering repeated glimpses of the lake through tunnel openings. This perspective reveals how the steep terrain shaped the region's history and its reliance on water routes.
