Sbarramento Lodrino-Osogna, Military fortification complex in Riviera District, Switzerland
The Lodrino-Osogna fortification consists of 23 infantry bunkers arranged in a V-shaped defensive line across the Ticino Valley between mountain slopes. This system includes multiple artillery positions along the Mairano-Mondascia line, with bunkers placed strategically to command the Alpine passes.
Construction of this defensive system started in 1939 and concluded in 1943, incorporating road barriers and railway mining installations. The project was built during World War II as part of a broader defensive strategy for the region.
The fortification's name, LONA, combines the opening letters of Lodrino with the closing letters of Osogna, following local traditions for naming military structures. Visitors can still see this naming convention reflected in signage and local documentation throughout the site.
The terrain is mountainous and requires good hiking boots and adequate physical preparation to explore the site thoroughly. It is best to visit during daylight hours and follow marked trails, as some areas may be rough or difficult to traverse.
A military airfield built in 1940 at Lodrino complemented the fortification system and enabled air combat operations and ground support missions. This combination of airfield and fortifications was an uncommon strategic arrangement for the period.
