Cholfirst Radio Tower, Communication tower in Flurlingen, Switzerland
The Cholfirst Radio Tower is a 96-meter concrete and steel structure built on Cholfirst Mountain to transmit radio signals across the region. The tower features a lattice framework and allows visitors to access an observation deck partway up its height.
The tower was built in 1973 by Swiss Post and Telecommunications as a replacement for an experimental television transmitter that operated for three years before that. It has served the region as a broadcast hub for many decades since its construction.
The tower broadcasts radio signals across the Zurich region that people listen to in their cars and homes. Visitors climb up to experience the high vantage point and gain a sense of the landscape below.
Visitors can climb 191 steps to reach an observation deck located roughly 42 meters up the structure. Clear weather provides the best viewing conditions for seeing the surrounding region from this vantage point.
The facility stopped transmitting digital television signals in 2019 while continuing to broadcast radio programs. This shift shows how a single broadcast site adapted as technology changed over time.
