Fornohütte, Mountain hut in Val Forno, Switzerland
Fornohütte is a mountain refuge built at 2574 meters on the valley's east side, positioned above the Forno glacier and surrounding granite peaks. The building can house around 75 people with additional emergency shelter, taking advantage of its elevated position to overlook the dramatic terrain below.
The refuge was built in 1889 and has served alpine travelers exploring the high routes of Bregaglia ever since. This long history shows how the place became an important base for mountain access across generations.
The hut sits where Swiss and Italian traditions meet, and you can feel this cultural blend in how the place is used and experienced by visitors from both regions.
The hut operates mainly from March to April and July to September, and conditions are basic at this high altitude. Bring warm clothing and sturdy boots, and be prepared for cold weather and changing mountain conditions.
A challenging hiking route of about 10 kilometers with roughly 1100 meters of elevation gain passes through this area, where local mountain animals roam regularly. Walkers often encounter wild goats and other alpine wildlife along the way.
