Lugano degli Angioli funicular, Funicular railway in Lugano, Switzerland.
Lugano degli Angioli funicular was a cable railway that connected the area near Santa Maria degli Angioli church with Via Clemente Maraini. The 142-meter track climbed about 53 meters vertically on grades reaching 44 percent slope.
The funicular was built by the Stigler company from Milan and opened for service in 1913. It operated until its final closure in October 1986.
The funicular served as a vital link for residents and visitors navigating between Lugano's steep residential areas and its central core. It reflected how early 20th-century engineering responded to the practical challenges of moving people through a hillside city.
The funicular was most crowded during morning and evening rush hours on weekdays, as many people relied on it for commuting. The single blue cabin with room for about 26 passengers made it convenient for short trips through the steep city center.
At the upper station, a 30-meter bridge connected directly to the third floor of the Bristol hotel. This direct link allowed hotel guests to arrive and depart conveniently by rail without going outside.
