Arbre à palabres, Contemporary metal sculpture in Bonanjo district, Douala, Cameroon
The sculpture features a trunk and branches made of painted iron rods with colored glass fragments representing leaves, reaching a height of 5.1 meters.
The installation replaced a former gathering tree in Bonaberi that fell in 1993, following negotiations between community leaders and the artist Frédéric Keiff.
The structure serves as a modern interpretation of traditional meeting spaces where village chiefs gathered to make important community decisions.
Wooden benches integrated into the trunk structure provide seating for visitors near three historical landmarks: Kings Bell Vault, Espace doual'art, and Old Law Court.
Glass and plastic fragments attached to metal branches create shifting color patterns as sunlight passes through the canopy throughout the day.
