Site of the First Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, Historical museum in Huangpu District, Shanghai, China

The Site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party occupies two adjoining two-storey shikumen houses at 76 and 78 Xingye Road. The grey-brick facade is banded with red-orange brick; four dark double doors with round metal handles sit beneath carved arched tympana with oval medallions, and a light plaque with Chinese characters hangs between the leftmost doors. Inside, the downstairs meeting room of No. 76 is furnished as it was in 1921, with a long western-style dining table, twelve round stools, a tea set, a pink glass vase and a pair of copper ashtrays.

Built in 1920 as a shikumen residence in the French Concession, the two houses at 106 and 108 Rue Wantz were rented by Li Hanjun and his brother Li Shucheng, who joined the interiors. The First Congress opened on 23 July 1921 at the Bo Wen Girls' School, then moved here; on the evening of 30 July a French Concession police detective interrupted the session, and the delegates finished in early August on a boat on South Lake, Jiaxing.

The name visitors see on the plaque, 中国共产党第一次全国代表大会会址, marks the house where the party's founding congress opened on 23 July 1921. The meeting room at 76 Xingye Road is refurnished as it was then, with a long Western-style dining table and twelve round stools. Since 1997 the site has been listed as a national patriotism education base, and since 2021 it has formed part of a national 5A scenic area with the sites of the second and fourth congresses.

The site is easily reached by taking Metro Line 1 to South Huangpi Road Station or by using bus routes 146 and 805. Admission is free, and opening hours are daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so plan to spend a few hours exploring the exhibits.

The museum holds a group of sculptures of the delegates to the First Congress, with Mao Zedong standing at the centre and the others seated around him; the figures of delegates who later left the party are turned with their backs to visitors.
