Lufeng, county-level city in Shanwei, Guangdong, China
Lufeng is a city in Guangdong province located on the South China Sea coast, southeast of Hong Kong. It consists of small streets, busy markets, and village communities where farming, fishing, and small factories form the backbone of local work.
Lufeng was established as Lufeng County during the Qing dynasty and in 1927 became part of the short-lived Hailufeng Soviet, an early farmers movement. The region played a role in the early Chinese revolutionary movement, particularly under Peng Pai, who organized farmers groups to improve their rights and challenge landlord power.
Lufeng is home to multiple dialect speakers including Mandarin, Hokkien, and Teochew, reflecting the city's cultural diversity. In local markets and public spaces, you observe people maintaining daily traditions and connecting naturally through shared routines.
The city connects to other parts of Guangdong via a railway station outside the main area, and future high-speed rail lines will improve travel connections. It is best to explore in the morning and early afternoon when markets and streets are most active.
The area around Lufeng and nearby Haifeng was the site of one of the earliest farmers uprisings during the Chinese revolution, led by Peng Pai, an activist who studied in Japan and brought new ideas about justice to China. Though the movement was short-lived and suppressed by 1928, it left a lasting mark on early Chinese revolutionary history.
