Lufeng, county-level city in Shanwei, Guangdong, China
Lufeng is a county-level city in Guangdong province, situated along the South China Sea coast as part of the Shanwei prefecture. The urban center is surrounded by villages, farmland, and a long coastline where fishing and farming shape daily life.
Lufeng was established as a county during the Qing dynasty and gradually grew into a regional administrative center. In the early 20th century, it gained wider attention through rural organizing movements that left a lasting mark on the area's political identity.
In Lufeng, several languages are spoken side by side in daily life, including Hakka, Teochew, and Hoklo, each tied to different communities that settled here over time. Wandering through the local markets, you can hear these languages switch naturally from stall to stall.
Lufeng has a railway station that connects the city to other parts of Guangdong province, and a network of roads links the surrounding villages. The city is most active in the morning and early afternoon, when markets and streets see the most foot traffic.
Peng Pai, the activist who led the rural organizing movements of the 1920s in this area, had studied in Japan before returning home to work with farming communities. The short-lived Hailufeng Soviet, proclaimed in 1927 across this area, is considered one of the first of its kind in China.
