Chaozhou Museum, Municipal museum in Xiangqiao District, China.
Chaozhou Museum is a multi-story building in the Xiangqiao District that holds regional artifacts, handcrafted objects, and historical documents from Guangdong province. The rooms cover ceramics, woodcarvings, musical instruments, and written records spanning several centuries.
The museum opened in 1959 as the first major institution in the area devoted to gathering and preserving local objects and traditions. Over the following decades it grew steadily, becoming the main reference point for the documented history of Chaozhou.
The woodcarvings on display reflect a craft tradition still active in local temples and homes across Chaozhou. Visitors can see how specific decorative patterns were passed from one generation to the next through objects made for everyday use.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, and visiting on a weekday tends to be quieter than on weekends. Guided tours are available, but the labels throughout are clear enough to follow the displays at your own pace.
Some of the porcelain pieces in the collection were made during the Ming Dynasty specifically for export trade rather than local use, which makes their designs noticeably different from objects meant for everyday life in the region. This contrast is visible when you compare them side by side with domestic wares in the same room.
