Shanghai Jinjiang Hotel, Historic hotel and skyscraper in Ruijinerlu Subdistrict, Shanghai, China
The Shanghai Jinjiang Hotel occupies three Art Deco buildings designed by Palmer & Turner on Maoming South Road, all former properties of Victor Sassoon. The 13-storey Cathay Mansion (1929) and the 18-storey Grosvenor House (1934) stand around lawns, with a three-storey annex along the street. The tower's facade pairs pale vertical columns with dark glass strips, stepping back below a rounded crown.
The complex began as two Art Deco apartment blocks designed by Palmer & Turner for Victor Sassoon: Cathay Mansion (13 storeys, 1929) and Grosvenor House (18 storeys, 1934). In 1951 the government took over Cathay Mansion and turned it into a guest house for senior officials and foreign visitors, with Dong Zhujun, founder of the 1935 Jinjiang Sichuan restaurant, as first chairman. Grosvenor House was added in 1956, and the three historic buildings were listed as Shanghai cultural relics in 1989.
The building reflects Shanghai's history as a meeting point for different cultures, visible in how its European-influenced exterior contrasts with the interior spaces designed for modern Chinese and international living. This mix shows how the city has absorbed and blended influences from its past.
The hotel sits near Huaihai Road, a major shopping center, with direct access to subway stations and retail districts. Its location makes it convenient to use Shanghai's public transport and reach surrounding commercial areas.
The hotel's small auditorium, built in 1959, hosted the Eighth Plenary Session of the Eighth Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party that same year. On 28 February 1972 the Shanghai Communiqué, which marked a step toward normalised Sino-American relations, was signed and released there. The US delegation stayed at the hotel during Nixon's 1972 visit.
