Lyceum Theatre, Historical theatre in Ruijinerlu Subdistrict, Shanghai, China.
Lyceum Theatre is a brick theatre building on Maoming Lu in Shanghai with orchestra and balcony seating areas. The structure contains multiple levels designed to accommodate both live stage performances and film screenings.
The theatre was first built in 1866 as a wooden structure at Yanmingyuan Road and relocated to its current site in 1874 following a fire. The new building became an established venue for performances throughout the following decades.
The venue shifted between cinema screenings and live performances, notably hosting Peking Opera shows after World War II and serving the Shanghai International Film Festival.
The venue sits in a central area of Shanghai and is easily reached from the Huangpu District center. Visitors should check for current schedules and performances before planning a visit to make the most of their time.
The building was designed by architects Atkinson & Dallas and displays design details from the 1930s era. A major renovation in the 1990s helped restore its appearance to match that historical period.
