Plaza 66, Commercial skyscraper in Nanjing Xi Lu, China
Plaza 66 is a skyscraper on Nanjing Xi Lu in Shanghai, rising 66 floors above street level with three basement floors below. The lower floors house a luxury shopping mall, while the upper floors are occupied by offices.
The tower was designed by the American firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and completed in 2006. It was built during a period when the Nanjing Xi Lu corridor was being heavily redeveloped as Shanghai reshaped its city center.
The Nanjing Xi Lu strip has long been Shanghai's main shopping street, and this tower sits at its heart, drawing locals and visitors alike. The mix of global luxury labels and the constant flow of people give the street a rhythm that feels more like an event than a daily commute.
The building connects directly to Shanghai's metro network through underground passages, making it easy to reach without a car. Weekday visits tend to be less crowded, especially in the mall areas on the lower floors.
Although Plaza 66 is often seen as a single tower, the complex actually consists of two towers, with the second one being much shorter and frequently overlooked. From street level, most visitors only notice the taller tower because the second one sits set back behind it.
