Shanghai Grand Theatre stands at Renmin Avenue and Huangpi North Road, its broad curved roof cantilevered over a glass-panelled facade with a balcony hung with four red flags. Inside are three halls: the gold-and-red Auditorium seating 1631, the walnut-toned Buick Theater with 575 seats, and the dark grey Studio Theater on the fifth floor with 220 fixed and 80 movable seats.
In 1994 the Shanghai Municipal People's Government began construction with a 3 billion RMB investment, after the reform era brought more international troupes than the city's existing halls could host. French architect Jean-Marie Charpentier designed it with the Institute of Architectural Design of Eastern China. It opened on 27 August 1998 and houses the Shanghai Opera House.
The venue hosts both traditional Chinese opera and contemporary international performances for local and visiting audiences. You can experience the mix of classical and modern productions that define Shanghai's cultural life.
The building has eight floors above ground and two below, with the Auditorium, the Buick Theater on the first floor and the Studio Theater on the fifth floor. The complex sits at the corner of Renmin Avenue and Huangpi North Road, on the northern side of People's Square, reachable from People's Square station on metro lines 1, 2 and 8.
The building's three halls differ in size and colour: the 1,631-seat Auditorium in gold and red, the 575-seat Buick Theater in walnut, and the 220-seat Studio Theater, a dark grey black box on the fifth floor. The Studio Theater also has 80 movable seats that can be rearranged for experimental and fashion shows.
