Shanghai Museum, Bronze art museum in Huangpu District, Shanghai, China
The Shanghai Museum is a major art museum in Huangpu District, Shanghai, dedicated to ancient Chinese artifacts. The building holds more than 120,000 objects displayed across eleven permanent galleries spread over several floors.
The institution opened in 1952 inside the former clubhouse at the Shanghai Racecourse. It moved to its present structure on People's Square in 1996.
The permanent collection includes ancient bronze vessels, ceramics, calligraphy, furniture, jades, coins, paintings, seals, sculptures, and minority art from Chinese dynasties.
The museum sits directly at the exit of People's Square metro station, served by lines 1, 2, and 8. Opening hours run daily from 9 am to 5 pm.
The building's shape echoes an ancient bronze cooking vessel called a ding, with a square base supporting a round upper section. This design reflects the collection inside and gives the structure a recognizable profile on People's Square.
