The venue was founded in 1917 by businessman Huang Chujiu as an amusement center in downtown Shanghai. Over the decades, it transformed into a space dedicated to cultural preservation amid the city's changing history.
The venue hosts traditional theater performances and displays of intangible cultural heritage across four dedicated floors, showcasing local artists from Shanghai and beyond. Visitors can watch craft demonstrations and experience the performance traditions that remain active here.
The complex is easily accessible by subway at Dashijie Station on Lines 8 and 14 or People's Square Station on Lines 1, 2, and 8 in the heart of the city. Opening hours run from 9 AM to 5 PM daily.
The lobby features twelve distorting mirrors that were imported from the Netherlands during the venue's early years of operation. These unusual features remain a curious detail for visitors exploring the building.
