Renmin Building is a government office complex at 200 Renmin Avenue, where the east-west avenue meets the north-south axis of People's Square. It consists of a 72.5-metre main tower with 18 floors above ground and two basement levels, plus four-storey east and west wings, north and south blocks, and a service building. The complex covers 35,700 square metres of land with 87,700 square metres of floor space and accommodates over 2,500 office workers.

The site held a three- to five-storey office building for the Shanghai People's Congress from 1964. In 1987 the city drafted plans for a new administrative centre to free the Bund for finance, and construction ran from December 1992 to 1 July 1995. The municipal government then moved here from the former HSBC building on Zhongshan East Road, which passed to Pudong Development Bank; the name Renmin Building was formally assigned to 200 Renmin Avenue on 3 December 1997.

The building's name dates from 3 December 1997, when the Shanghai Place Names Committee officially designated 200 Renmin Avenue as "Renmin Building". Its halls host the sessions of the municipal People's Congress and government press conferences, and the building is closed to visitors.

It was designed by the Shanghai Architectural Design and Research Institute; the Japanese architect Kenzō Tange is credited in French sources, which the Chinese article does not mention.
