Shanghai Race Club

Shanghai Race Club was a horse racing venue in central Shanghai featuring neoclassical design mixed with European influences. The clubhouse contained marble staircases, spacious coffee rooms, and areas where traditional Chinese architectural elements coexisted with Western design features.

The site was founded in 1850 and became an independent institution in 1862 after separating from the Shanghai Recreation Club. This establishment marked the start of organized horse racing in Shanghai.

For decades, this served as a gathering place where foreign residents and wealthy Chinese nationals met for racing events and social occasions. The venue shaped how different communities interacted during Shanghai's international period.

The site is now integrated into People's Square and People's Park, with the original clubhouse preserved as a historic structure. Visitors can view the exterior from the surrounding park areas and approach the building from multiple angles.

Membership required a unanimous vote from committees, making it one of the most exclusive social institutions in colonial Shanghai. This strict admission process deeply shaped the social hierarchies of that era.
