Shimao International Plaza is a 333.3-metre, 60-storey tower at 789 Nanjing East Road in Shanghai's Huangpu District. Its blue glass facade is divided by light grey vertical strips running the full height; the lower part steps outward in setbacks, and two thin spires rise side by side above the flat top. It contains a 10-storey podium mall and a hotel in the upper floors.
The project started in 2001 after the Wan Xiang Group transferred the site to Shanghai Shimao Group, and the tower was completed in 2006. The construction took place during a period when Nanjing Road was being deeply transformed into a modern commercial corridor.
The lower floors house a large shopping center that draws both locals and tourists throughout the day. Walking through the entrance hall gives a sense of how central Nanjing Road is to everyday life in Shanghai.
The tower sits in the middle of Nanjing Road and is easy to reach on foot from several nearby metro stations. Several street-level entrances lead directly into the shopping area, making it simple to enter without any prior planning.
The two thin masts rising side by side above the flat roof are what push the tower's height to 333.3 metres; the roof slab itself sits lower. The building was designed by Ingenhoven, Overdiek und Partner with the East China Architecture and Design Institute, and its main structure topped out on 18 October 2004, when it became the tallest building in Puxi.
