Shimao International Plaza, Commercial skyscraper on Nanjing Road, Shanghai, China.
Shimao International Plaza is a skyscraper on Nanjing Road in Shanghai, China, standing 333.3 meters (about 1,094 feet) tall and combining office space, a hotel, and a shopping center across 60 floors. The building sits on a triangular footprint, which gives its base a distinctive three-sided shape that can be seen at street level.
The project started in 2001 after the Wan Xiang Group transferred the site to Shanghai Shimao Group, and the tower was completed in 2006. The construction took place during a period when Nanjing Road was being deeply transformed into a modern commercial corridor.
The lower floors house a large shopping center that draws both locals and tourists throughout the day. Walking through the entrance hall gives a sense of how central Nanjing Road is to everyday life in Shanghai.
The tower sits in the middle of Nanjing Road and is easy to reach on foot from several nearby metro stations. Several street-level entrances lead directly into the shopping area, making it simple to enter without any prior planning.
The diagonal braces visible on the outside of the building are not just a design choice but serve a structural role, helping the tower resist wind at this height. This makes the engineering logic of the building readable from the street without any prior knowledge of architecture.
