Bund Center, Postmodern skyscraper in Huangpu District, Shanghai, China.
Bund Center is a postmodern skyscraper in the Huangpu District of Shanghai, standing on the west bank of the Huangpu River. The tower is built with a glass and steel exterior and topped by a peaked crown shaped to resemble a crystalline form.
The tower was completed in 2002, designed by American architect John C. Portman Jr. for the financial area along the Bund. It was built during a period when Shanghai was actively developing its riverfront to attract international businesses.
The Bund Center stands next to the historic Bund promenade, where early 20th-century colonial facades meet newer towers built after China opened to foreign investment. This contrast is easy to notice while walking along the riverfront.
The building sits directly on the Bund promenade and can be reached on foot from Nanjing Road East or He'nan Middle Road metro stations. There is also a direct underground connection to the Shanghai Metro, which is useful in bad weather.
The glass crown at the top appears to change color depending on the light and time of day, shifting between silver, gold, and grey tones when viewed from the Bund promenade. This effect is most visible at sunset or on overcast days.
