Xiangtan, prefecture-level city in Hunan, China
Xiangtan is a major city in Hunan province located along the Xiang River and positioned between the cities of Changsha and Zhuzhou. The city has two districts, one county, and two smaller cities, covering about 5000 square kilometers with a mix of flat plains, hilly areas, and small mountains.
Xiangtan was officially established as a county during the Tang Dynasty around the 7th century and maintained that status for many centuries. The city gained its current status in 1950 following the founding of the People's Republic of China.
The name Xiangtan comes from the Xiang River that flows through the city. Residents maintain traditional habits like drinking tea in parks and gathering with friends, reflecting the relaxed rhythm of daily life.
Visiting is easiest in spring or autumn when the weather is pleasant and nature displays its best colors. Buses and bicycles are the most common ways to explore, with regular bus connections available to Changsha and Wuhan.
The city is the birthplace of more than 140 notable figures in Chinese history and culture, including painter Qi Baishi and military leader Peng Dehuai. This rich concentration of talent and influence has given the city a deep connection to China's most significant moments.
